Laser Hair Removal
Laser Hair Removal is a modern high/tech method of permanent hair
removal that can safely disable several hair follicles with a simple
trigger pull. At Pour Le Corps we use the latest in medical laser
technology, the "Cutera CoolGlide" (formerly known as
"The Altus Cool Glide) which is FDA approved for multiple skin
tones and 90% hair reduction. This effective hair removal system
works by sending a filtered light beam to a group of hair follicles
with enough power to disable the hair root but not enough power to
harm the surrounding skin tissues or delicate pores. Since laser
cannot destroy every hair, Electrolysis may be necessary to reach
your ultimate or maximum goal. For this reason we provide both laser
and electrolysis services so you may attain a complete and permanent
solution for your hair removal needs.. For eye safety, it is advised
that laser not be performed on eyebrows.
All Laser treatments are performed by registered nurses and overseen
by Board Certified Plastic Surgeons.

How Laser Works
The following information is based upon various reports and articles
that have been written about laser hair removal.
Laser Hair Removal works by sending a beam of light to a group of
hair follicles with enough power to disable or destroy the root but
not enough power to harm the surrounding skin tissue and delicate
pores. This process is called selective photothermolysis. It is
selective because it treats only the hair and not the skin. Photo
means light and thermolysis means destroying with heat. The
surrounding skin is usually cooled by means of a gel, a spray, or a
cooling tip to protect the skin.
The Laser Beam finds the hair follicles by targeting the substance
that gives skin and hair dark color - melanin. Therefore, the ideal
candidate for laser has dark hair and light skin. The laser will not
work on people with red, white, gray or true blonde hair. The laser
light will also be attracted to the melanin in the skin, so people
with suntans, or dark skin types are at more of a risk for
discoloration of pigment and other side effects. Although there are
lasers available today to treat various skin tones and skin types,
one must proceed with caution if he or she has a tan or has dark
toned skin.
Laser Hair Removal is the high tech /modern method of safely
destroying several hair follicles with a simple trigger pull. Laser
only destroys hairs in its active growth phase, the anagen phase.
This phase lasts several years, and up to 85% of our hair is in that
phase at any given time. During this phase, the hair has an abundance
of melanin and the hair follicle is easily targeted.
Common Laser Questions
What color hair responds best to laser?
Dark hair absorbs more laser energy and is easier to treat. Coarse
dark hair responds the best to laser treatments. Light hair is more
difficult to treat. Red or blonde hair is even more resistant to
laser. Multiple treatment sessions are required and results will
vary. Blonde or red hair usually contains pheomelanin, which absorbs
laser energy less avidly than the eumelanin pigment, which is present
in black or brown hair.
When is laser most effective?
Although one laser treatment can produce long-term hair removal, as a
rule, multiple treatment sessions are necessary to obtain optimal
results. This is due to the fact that laser hair removal is most
effective for hair, which is in the anagen or growth phase of hair.
Since hair grows in cycles, not all of the hairs are in the anagen
stage at any given time. Additional sessions are necessary to catch
all the hairs when they are in the growth cycle.
When will I achieve results?
It is impossible to predict the exact result a patient will achieve
with laser hair removal, especially with regard to how many sessions
a given individual will require. Many of the hair removal clinics
that guaranteed results have gone out of business. Like most
reputable medical practices, the most well established laser hair
removal practices do not guarantee results.
Why are there discount laser clinics?
Established medical centers with excellent reputations do not
discount their fees. Patients know their reputations and rely upon
their experience and expertise. The same is true for laser hair
removal. Consumers are advised, as with all forms of medical care, to
seek the center of highest quality, rather than the lowest cost.
Laser hair removal requires exacting science, individual attention,
experience, and a trained, caring, professional staff.
How many treatments will I need?
Everyone will need at least three treatments for good results,
because while all hair is temporarily disabled during each treatment,
not all hair is destroyed. A series of treatments is necessary to
allow results to accumulate. Most people do not need to continue
beyond six. People with hormonal imbalances or people who have waxed
or tweezed a lot may need more than average. After the treatment
regimen is completed, hair may grow very sparsely. If this occurs,
electrolysis may be a good idea for any remaining hair.
What areas can be treated?
All areas except adjacent to the eye, where there is excess hair.
Common areas requested are the face, upper lip, neck, chest,
periareolar, underarms, back, abdomen, bikini line, and legs.
Laser Light
There are four different kinds of laser light that are commonly used
for hair removal. The following lasers are all effective, fast, safe
and comfortable:
There are several factors that customize a laser treatment for
efficacy, safety and comfort:
Pulse - long pulsed lasers are considered the safest.
Fluence - selection of energy levels can be adjusted for skin type.
Delay - the time in between pulses of light (cooling time)
affects how much the skin and hair follicle are allowed to safely
cool off.
Spot Size- affects the speed and penetration of the laser. A
larger spot size penetrates deeper and helps to reach hair at the
depth at which it grows.
Cooling - the surrounding skin may be protected by a gel,
spray or cooling hand piece.
Note: The FDA has approved several lasers for permanent
hair reduction. At Pour Le Corps, the best laser of choice is the
Altus CoolGlide. The state of the art CoolGlide laser is equipped
with all of the safety and beneficial features previously described
and are currently FDA approved for 90% hair reduction. Permanent
results tend to be additive, i.e. more treatments lead to greater
permanent hair reduction. For any given patient, results cannot be
precisely predicted. Results can be variable, even with the
best-known lasers.
